I did not get out to campaign for the Green Party tonight, but I am waiting breathlessly for the debates to begin. My house is over-run by squawking children that prevented my escape.
As a proud Canuckistanian, I get to be more interested in the politics of my neighboring country than my own. Should I tune into an American teevee channel and watch the VP debate or should I tune into the Canadian debates? Will Palin charm the dim-witted masses with her Tina Fey glasses and beauty queen smile? Will Biden blind them with his brilliance and end up looking like a big old meanie pants? Will Elizabeth May dazzle and shine in the Canadian debates? Will the sacking of the pot activists from BC be used to make Layton look stupid? Will Harper show up for the debates in his trademark sweater and holding a kitten? Will Dion continue to mangle the English language? Will anybody care about THE ISSUES? What the hell are the issues? Did I buy enough beer to get me through the debates? Did anybody post a debate drinking game?
HEAD EXPLODING!!!11
Anyway, that’s what’s going through my head right now.
Prepare to be amused and horrified by this clip of Sarah Palin being interviewed by Katie Couric. I have never in my life felt sorry for a politician, as they are a bunch of blood-sucking insects. But watching Palin humiliate herself was really awful. Please, just drop out of the race already and put a stop to this madness.
This is an amazing smackdown of the Republican party. Never in my blogging life did I ever expect to read a former Republican pro-lifer write such a glorious diatribe. Here is just one bit of its’ goodness:
That said — certain power-hungry individuals (Dobson, Falwell, Robertson, Rove, Reed et al.) took the energy of our original pro-life movement and used it to build a hate campaign reminiscent of the early momentum that drove European Fascist parties in the mid-1920s through the mid-1940s. Fear of the “other” gays, immigrants, intellectuals, artists, the media, feminists, etc., morphed into a general critique of “the elite” which turned out to be anyone with an education or even big city dwellers. The Religious Right became a crude populist movement pitting the resentful rubes against the rest.
What are you waiting for? Go and read the whole thing. I promise you it will be worth your while.
Kelly Block’s office is right next to Skunk Funk Emporium, a very fine head shop located on 22nd street and avenue G. I highly approve. I found this out yesterday when I was there dropping off fliers to promote the Freedom Tour, which is coming to town on Saturday, September 20th. We are having a political rally. I will post more about this after school. Here is the poster.
I love her so much. Check out this video on Sarah Palin.
She’s a pro-lifer who gave birth to a child with Down’s syndrome. Now the word is that Sarah Palin’s unwed teenage daughter is five months pregnant and is planning to marry the baby’s father. Palin obviously practices what she preaches.
As if that wasn’t wingnutty enough, she also supports the rights of parents to keep their kids ignorant, anti reproductive rights for women, opposes sex education and gay marriage. The results of her own policies can be seen right in her very own family. It’s a good thing that Palin’s daughter did not use birth control, otherwise she would not know the joy of young grandmotherhood.
Did you hear about the case of five woman being shot and then buried alive in Pakistan? No? Well, pry yourself away from the Obama/McCain/Palin/Biden chatter for a second and I’ll tell you all about it.
Balochistan Senator Sardar Israrullah Zehri stunned the upper house on Friday when he defended the recent incident of burying alive three teenage girls and two women in his province, saying it was part of “our tribal custom.”
Senator Bibi Yasmin Shah of the PML-Q raised the issue citing a newspaper report that the girls, three of them aged between 16 and 18 years, had been buried alive a month ago for wishing to marry of their own will.
Just wrap your brain around that for a second. It’s pretty easy to get complacent in your Western, liberal bubble and forget that all these rights that we take for granted do not exist for so many people. I can happily live with my partner, avoid marriage or choose to end a relationship with next to no consequences, while on the other side of the world five women get shot and buried alive for wishing to choose their marriage partners while government officials defend it as a “tribal custom”. This is a horrific example of brutality. No one has been arrested for this outrage yet and the incident is being investigated. Giving up bustiers and nail polish seems like a small, insignificant and painless gesture.
I already live my life free of most feminine accessories. How about if next time I get invited to a wedding, instead of politely declining, instead I launch into one of my speeches about how marriage is a tool of the patriarchy? This may just result in my friends giving me a blank look, but it seems preferable to the alternatives.
I read this criticism of Barack Obama in the Star Phoenix, that people think he is too cerebral.
Now I have done my very best to unplug from the run for President because I find the whole thing way too depressing. I mean, is this what passes for political discourse these days? Can being too smart hamper your political campaign? I think my head just exploded.
